Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment (OMT)

Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment is a hands‑on approach employed by osteopathic physicians in treating dysfunctions and disorders of all kinds.  Part of osteopathic training includes many hours of manual diagnosis and treatment of somatic dysfunction, which is any abnormality of bone, muscle, joint, ligament, tendon, fascia, etc., that hinders normal motion or function.  By removing the hindrances to normal function, the body is able to repair itself, thereby resolving pain, improving range of motion, allowing for proper flow of vital fluids, normalizing nerve signaling, and more.

OMT is performed by utilizing a range of treatment techniques that can involve very gentle to very firm pressure, sometimes applied over a prolonged time or even quite abruptly.  The patient may not be able to perceive anything being done, or may experience significant, but generally brief, discomfort.  Some treatments are passive and the patient simply lies still, while others require cooperative efforts with the physician to produce the desired effects.

Most treatments provide improvement of symptoms in a timely manner that may be immediate, but can also take days to be realized.  Occasionally there is discomfort following treatment, but that should not last more than the remainder of the day of treatment or perhaps the day following.  Any worsening of pain or symptoms that do not resolve should be reported to the treating physician for further care.
